First Filming Session.

My first filming session went very well, but not without its hiccups. It started out being extremely difficult to get everybody into the same place at the same time, as Maisey and Kele-Rose would much rather have spent their day in the park. However the prospect of being in a documentary was too good to pass up.

Finally getting them into the swing of things it because a lot easier to control the outcome. Out of the tons of material shot, I suspect a lot to cut out as there was a lot of giggles, as you would expect from two 11-year-old girls. However I also suspect a lot of this to be used as the bulk of my documentary.

Advert Sketches.

This was also taken from an advert I have analysed, which is that of the channel 4 "Bigger. Fatter, Gypsier." advert. It contains one main image of my subject and also includes vital information such as Date, Time and TV channel.

Double Page Spread Sketches.

The idea for this double page spread sketch came from the 'My Girls a Human Babrie' article I have looked at previously. The many images are to draw the reader in and the text is in collums, which is very conventional of all double page spreads.

Storyboards.

This story board was drawn on A2 paper. Although documentaries are suposed to dipict realitiy they however do have some narrative and the documentary maker always has some idea of how they wish thing to look. This is why I have chosen to draw a storyboard ful of shot ideas instead of a full storyboard.

Synopsis

My documentary will follow the daily life of young girl and the pressure, forced upon her by society to grow up too fast. Following the young girl as she plays with her friends, shops and applies her make-up, including  interviews allow you to gain more of an incite to what others think of the issue.

This documentary will send a message about how the media and celebrity culture influence young girls. It will also uncover the ways in which young girls learn about the pressures of looking good, even when going to school or just playing with their friends.

Characters / Actresses.

The main subject for my documentary is 11-year-old Maisey, who is extremely confident so, as I thought, would have no problem in front of the camera. I don't want to manipulate Maisey's own character too much within the documentary, I want it to feel very natural and almost fly-on-the-wall.

Another smaller character is that of Maisey's friend Kele-Rose, This was an easy decision for me to make as the relationship between the two is very grown up for their age, and this is very much in tune with the message of my documentary. This is also to show that this effects many girls of that age.

Audience Research.

In order to conduct my audience research I sent many emails to research companies asking about their methods of research, Many of them being very helpful and answering all the questions I needed, however some refused to comment, arguing they could not disclose such information.

From what I had found out next to surveys, focus groups was a method used by many to collect data. A focus group is a group of people shown a clip and asked to respond to what they saw. As it was the closest to my own work, I chose to show my focus group a clip from Baby Beauty Queens and asked them what their initial response to this clip was, and found many felt the same as what I was trying to portray in my documentary. However some disagreed completely and said that it was the parents choice as to how they raised their children.
